Chapter Twenty

Kellan

Did that just happen?

He’d asked himself the question a dozen times over since they’d finished, and even now, dressed and sprawled out on the couch, he couldn’t quite bring himself to believe that it had.

All the effort he’d gone to, to convince himself that it wasn’t going to happen, and then Rene had turned that all on its head by opening up to him unexpectedly.

His dragon at least was no longer a problem. The first time with his mate had left it happy and sated, content that the world was right and as it should be. He no longer had to worry about it unexpectedly trying something, at least not for a while. Not until it realized that, just because they’d had sex, didn’t mean they were now mated for life.

Not in Rene’s eyes at least. Still, it was more than he could have hoped for, and he planned to do his best to ensure things continued on a smooth path between them.

“So what now?” Rene asked from where she sat on the other end of the couch, looking equally satisfied. “Where do we go from here?”

Kellan eyed the bag at her feet, trying to think of anything he might have missed. It was packed with some clothes, a few more bundles of money that should take care of any expenses, planned or unexpected, that he might have until his accounts could be unfrozen. A few other odds and ends had been thrown in there as well, including a few Rene had missed him toss into the bottom.

All in all, he didn’t see any need for them to remain in his vault. It wasn’t stocked with much in the way of food, so they couldn’t stay for long even if they wanted to. Which meant getting back to the Rixa compound and then, after that, likely Five Peaks itself.

“I don’t know,” he said at last, deciding it was better to be honest than to try and act like he had a grand plan when he simply did not.

“It’s growing dark out,” she said, looking around at the growing dimness inside the vault.

“Yeah, we need to head back down,” he agreed. “But if we go back into Five Peaks, what do we do from there? Where do we go? How do we try to unravel this mystery? My brain isn’t providing any solid answers.”

Even as he said that, he sat upright on the couch, resting his chin in his hands as he leaned forward, elbows on his knees.

“Yeah, I’m unsure as well,” she admitted uncomfortably.

“What’s even their purpose behind all of this?” he questioned. “What are they trying to achieve? Why are they doing this?”

Rene was silent. He glanced over at her to see that her blue eyes were focused on the floor. She was giving the questions far more serious thought than he’d expected. They had simply been idle questions from him, things he’d been pondering and had no answers to. He stayed silent, letting her think, curious as to what she might say.
